Nikko cedar refers to cedar that grew and was produced in an area that roughly straddles the current two cities of Nikko and Kanuma. In ancient times, this area was a thriving area of ​​mountain worship, with worship centered around the Nikko Mountains, especially Mt. Nantai, the main peak of which was founded by Shodo Shonin, who is said to have been a figure from the Nara period to the early Heian period.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine was built in 1617, and Nikko cedar trees were planted along the three roads leading to it. The cedar trees that line this road are protected as a special natural monument.

The Nikko cedar in question is a 40-year-old tree that was grown in Nikko during the post-war reconstruction period. In addition to being used as a building material, cedar incense has developed as an industry using the abundant cedar as a raw material.
