Mt. Kōya is primarily known as the world headquarters of the Mt. 

The mountain top basin of Mt. Koya is enveloped by eight peaks reminiscent that look likes the eight petals of the lotus flower.
At the altitude of about 900 meters existed a location (Koyasan) that was originally granted to Buddhist monk Kodo Daishi Kukai by Emperor Saga, and that is sacred to Shingon Buddhism.

The temple here serve as training complex for meditation, and the combined belief that Mt. Koya is the Pure Land of Miroku and the Pure Land of Amida have gained the faith and respect of the general populace, such that from more than a thousand years ago, there continues to be a nonstop flow of worshippers traveling there.
