Aside from Hokkaido this is a very familiar tree dispersed across the whole country of Japan. As a material, it is hard and resistant to rubbing so it is used a lot for furniture, joinery or fixture.

The wood grain is very beautiful and when polished a remarkable luster is produced,
Such beauty has bene loved and revered by people since ancient time.
Among Zelkova trees, those of Mt Koya are precious and spiritual power is said to dwell within them
