Japan Stone: Kajiki Stone

Meaning: Long Life, Safety

Lava from Undersea eruption about 600.000 years ago. The stone is now mined less and less.
There are many small bubble, indicating that the pyroclastic flow at that time was hot and intense.
Inside the bubble are crystallized mineral separated from the lava`s components.
The place name Kajiki is said to derive from the legend of the camphor tree, which sprouted from the rudder of a ship on which it was placed and become a camphor tree.
The town of Kajiki used to be the domain of Shohachimangu shrine.
