This stone is from Niijima, which belongs to the Izu Islands, and was created by a volcano eruption 886 years ago. The Izu Islands were formed when magma erupted as the Philippine Sea Plate subducted, and the Izu Islands were created here. The Okhotsk Plate, the Amur Plate, and other plates still intersect here, and it is a place that continues to receive a lot of pressure from the Earth. The characteristic of sponge-like and very light is the result of the rapid cooling of the magma, and it is so light that it can floats on water. When viewed under a microscope, the beautiful glassy flow structure shows a pattern that looks like flowing water.
It is resistant to fire and acid, and has the unique properties of magma, which allows it to melt without crumbling when exposed to high temperatures, and then cool and harden again. Because it is a stone formed by rapid cooling, it has the property of not breaking down and maintaining its shape even if it is rapidly cooled again. It is not only fire-resistant, but also moisturizing and soundproofing. The Moai statue at Shibuya Station was also made from this stone. Moai means “cooperation” in Niijima’s language
