Obsidian was generated by furious volcanic activities of Daisetsuzan on about 1.5 million years ago. Since prehistoric days, Obsidian has been prized by people because they processed it into tools like arrowheads and knives. Some of the Obsidian turn whitish due to scratches they sustained while floating in the river. Some of the other obsidian contain pitch black glassy textures that can barely spotted from the outside. For the obsidian that is red in color, are called “Vermillion Obsidian” in Hokkaido and it is a very rare stone now.
