Yoshino Cypress

Along with cedars, this cypress is one of the types of wood representative of Japan. Even among cypresses, the cypress of the Yoshino, region of Nara Prefecture it’s known for its high quality, along with that Kiso Cypresses. In the history book, Nihon Shoki" which was written in the Nara period, there seems to be a description recommending the following: "Use cedar and camphor for boats, cypress for palace, and umbrella pine for coffins. "In line with those directions, since long ago, cypress was often used in large-scale construction project (such as castles shrines and temple) due to his strength and durability.
It is also said that Yoshino Cypress was used in the constructions of Horyuuji, the world`s oldest remaining wooden structure built 1300 years old
